Introduction

This webquest will help 4th graders explore and understand the math concepts of area and perimeter. Students will be involved in an authentic activity that ties the concepts of area and perimeter with real-world examples. This webquest is intended to last five days, but can be adapted if more time is needed.

 

Learners

This webquest is intended for 4th graders, but is also appropriate for advanced 3rd graders or 5th graders requiring more practice with the concepts of area and perimeter.

 

Florida State Standards (4th grade)

MA.4.G.3.2 Justify the formula for the area of the rectangle “area = base x height”

MA.4.G.3.3 Select and use appropriate units, both customary and metric,
strategies, and measuring tools to estimate and solve real-world area
problems

MA.4.G.5.3 Identify and build a 3-D object from a 2-D representation of that object
and vice versa.

Resources

Each team of four will need graph paper, four boxes of toothpicks, four bottles of white glue and a cardboard foundation.
